TypeCity
A typographic masterpiece! Every glyph of Adobe Jenson Pro is featured in this project in an original and unique way to create the Vancouver's infamous downtown public library. This monumental library was built to mimic Rome's Colosseum in 1995. Something modern, inspired from the ancient times. Rather than using the obvious Trajan Pro typeface, I used Adobe Jenson Pro. Jenson Pro was first released in 1996, and was based a Venetian oldstyle text face cut by Nicolas Jenson in 1470. Hence, drawing on the comparison of the library created in modern times, inspired by something ancient.
The original intent of this project was to project the library on building walls throughout Vancouver. This display was achieved for one night in July 2009. Now, the piece stands 5 ft wide, 4 ft tall and is available for purchase upon request.

Type Can
What does typography mean to you? At Type Camp California 2011, we asked all our participants what typography meant to them. We asked them to finish the simple sentence "Type Can". With 17 designers from all around the world, of all different specializations, it is brilliant to see how typography influences their work, and brought them all together for one week.
Type Camp is a series of workshops held all over the world throughout the year, taught by some of the top industry professionals. It has been my honour to work with this company as film maker, and I look forward to future camps over the next couple years. Type Camp provides a creative, modern, collaborative education in typography and design. They provide flexible non-traditional learning all over the world in order to help you become a better designer, no matter where you are. If you're interested in attending a camp, check out their upcoming line up at www.typecamp.org

Star Wars Typographic Deathstar
A 3D typographic scripted deathstar. Using the script from Star Wars Return of the Jedi, I categorized the words based on their frequency throughout the script. Words said the more often appear larger than words said less often. Inspired from the layers and cutouts of the death star, I created a 5 layer cut away, pushing the smaller, less frequent words farther back to the bottom layer. The next layer up contains the 2nd level of infrequent words. Continuing this pattern over 5 layers, the result is a high contrast between frequent and few words through size and depth.

"A Spooker's Diary" Mocumentary
A 60 minute documentary style film about the dunbar haunted house. The Dunbar Haunted House is a Vancouver Halloween phenomenon. This family-run haunted house began as a small fun project, and has turned into an infamous Vancouver event. For more information on the Dunbar Haunted House please visit www.dunbarhauntedhouse.com
Appropriately titled "A Spooker's Diary", this film follows the 2 week event, documenting an average day as one of their volunteer spookers. The timeline highlights the experience throughout each room of the haunt, giving both perspective of the spooker, and the spookee. Dispersed between this experience, the film cuts to behind the scenes of the inside of the actual house, and everything that goes on to make this event such a huge success.
This was a Screaming Black Dog Productions collaboration, involving many volunteers. Please contact Daria for a copy.

2010 Stop Motion Portfolio
Before I knew I'd won the Rethink Scholarship, I was asked to create a portfolio to hand in. Upon it's presentation, it was announced I had indeed won the scholarship! (I was esctatic to say the least, as I'd only been told I'd placed top 3!) When creating the portfolio, I'd decided to go out on a limb and explore a new avenue. Rather than an online, or printed book, I ventured into the world of stop motion for the first time. Still being in school, I explored the projects I was currently working on, demonstrating my process throughout each. The projects are presented in chronological order. Watch as my concepts and execution improve as my work progresses through Langara's Communication and Ideation Program.

Dunbar Haunted House 2010 Book
The Dunbar Haunted House is a family run haunted house in Vancouver. Having grown in size and popularity over the past 8 years, it is now a year long, non-profit project with over 120 volunteers. Each year, as a thank you too all their volunteers, a photo memoire book is given out, highlighting the displays in each room, and the spooker's of that year. This is my second book design for the Dunbar Haunted House. Photos taken by Andre Lanz and Relja Kojic. Book design, layout, and creative direction by Daria Lanz. Books are available for purchase upon request.

The Beauty of Horror
Reflecting my fascination with horror, I embarked on a journey of research into the psychology and philosophies behind why humans are drawn to horror. The result was a written paper referencing Freud, Aristotle, Plato and Homer, among others, and my observations on their philosophies and theories projected on today's human psyche. Taking it to the next level, I produced a hard cover book entitled "The beauty of horror". Designed with an eerie film vignette, and hand rendered typography, I created visuals to match the topics explored in the paper. Photos were used from my experience with the Dunbar Haunted House (see above), as well as various artists found online. This was a school project, not intended for publication. Research, writing, layout, and creative direction by Daria Lanz. Photos by Daria Lanz, Andre Lanz, Relja Kojic and various artists.

Type Camp Buffalo
Type Camp Buffalo Book Arts, a weeklong workshop in partnership with the Western New York Book Arts Center. This camp focused on the resources of the Western New York Book Arts Center, situated in downtown Buffalo, New York, managed by P22 type foundry founder Richard Kegler. This working printing museum has hundreds of metal and woodtype fonts and flat bed and platen presses, all of which allow for total immersion into the letterpress experience.
After a week of filming, I created both a short commercial film, and a longer, private film for all the participants. This short lives on the Type Camp YouTube Channel, and touches on the surface of all that was learned, explored and produced in one week.
The longer private film is available for viewing upon request, but is not intended for the public, and therefore not hosted online.

Yamaha Pianos
This school project focused on creating a brochure for a selected company of choice. I created this little booklet for Yamaha pianos, based around the concept that every piano fits a proper personality. Every piano can express the proper emotion the player is feeling at the time, it is merely the tool the musician becomes one with to express their emotions and feelings. I accomplished this by matching specific recognizable songs of all genres, and matching them to a photograph of a yamaha piano. Each spread represents the feeling and emotion that is tied to that particular song, and the visual of the piano represents the tool that is used to express this. This was a school project, never intended for publication. To view the process of this project's creation, view the 2010 Stop Motion Portfolio above. Photography by Daria Lanz, and stock photos.

Fawlty Towers Kinetic Typography
This school project focused on creating the visuals to an audio clip only using typography. I chose a clip from the hospital scene from Fawlty Towers, "The Germans". This scene is between Basil, Sybil and Basil's nurse. A combination of typefaces was used to illustrate each characters' personalities, and are set against a hospital green background.

Transformers Music Video
This is the school project that launched my love for film editing! Set out as a simple music video project, we were asked to take footage from a chosen video and create a music video for it. I spent a weekend cutting up the Transformer's first video, studying the film's editing style as I went. Then, editing it to the Mystery Jet's "Half in love with Elizabeth", I transformed the video into a 3:45 synopsis through movement.
